2016 barbarot

Since returning home in 2005, my goal has been to make the most of my enology studies and the gift my parents gave me: their vineyards in Haro, Spain. This wine can be labeled a "Terroir Wine," as we can appreciate what this soil has to offer. I strive to make a unique wine each vintage, remaining true to our motto: "We love what we do, and that's where Barbarot comes from."

Tasting note

Bright ruby red color. Aromas of red and black fruits, hints of black pepper, and smoky notes. A fairly fresh entry, with elegant and well-integrated tannins on the palate that melt with time, making it a wine with great aging potential.

2016 VINTAGE

The 2016 harvest took place in mid-October, with some rain just before picking. The winter was quite wet with rain and snow, which replenished the natural water reserves, giving the vines the ability to withstand an exceptionally warm summer. The grapes were in excellent condition, allowing us to choose the precise harvest date. This ensured they reached full phenolic ripeness. They were hand-harvested in small crates and then sorted on a selection table before fermentation in stainless steel tanks. The sugar concentration in the grapes was high and the acidity lower than we are used to; however, the result was a very well-balanced wine.

2021 HARVEST

After a cold pre-fermentation maceration, alcoholic fermentation was carried out with native yeasts from the vineyard. This lasted about 8 days at a controlled temperature, ensuring it did not exceed 26°C. Pump-overs of the cap were performed two or three times a day, along with delestage and manual punch-downs at the end of fermentation. We made every effort to minimize the use of pumps. Once alcoholic fermentation was complete, we began post-fermentation maceration, which lasted 4 weeks. Malolactic fermentation then took place in barrels. The wine is aged in used 225-liter, two-year-old French oak Bordeaux barrels for 15 months. The wine was bottled in June 2018.

carasoles de bilibio vineyards

Vineyard Size: 3 hectares
Varieties: Tempranillo and Merlot
Soil: Clay-Limestone
Altitude: 480 meters
Orientation: North-South
Planting Area: 2.6 m x 1 m
The vineyards are located in the municipality of Haro, the heart of the Rioja Alta region. The vineyard is protected from the harsh Atlantic weather by the Sierra de los Riscos de Bilibio mountain range and the foothills of the Sierra Cantabria.

The viticulture practiced here is "conventional," but for the past couple of years, it has focused on integrated and environmentally friendly production, eliminating the use of herbicides and carefully considering the use of plant protection products. Our goal is to achieve optimal phenolic ripeness, allowing us to produce balanced wines capable of withstanding long aging thanks to the pH balance of this vineyard.
